Pediatric Fever Education

Emily Cusick

Abstract

In the community of Stamford, many parents/guardians are unaware of cases that warrant emergent treatment and cases that require a visit to a local clinic. Stamford Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department is still new to the community, as it opened its doors in September of 2016. Because of how new this facility is, it is possible to implement ideas to help further this institution. In terms of pediatric fevers, I believe that more education is needed amongst parents/guardians of this community. Since Stamford Hospital has never had a separate pediatric Emergency Department, it would be best to implement a teaching tool that the nurses can provide their patients with.

Working in both the pediatric and adult emergency departments allowed me to differentiate between the medical attention needed for both populations. For example, there are some disease processes that are common in adults but really aren’t prevalent in children, such as hypertension. From a developmental standpoint, children require a different approach than adults do. The education tool that will be provided to the Stamford Emergency Department will hopefully be helpful not only for the pediatric population, but also for their parents/guardians as well.
