Abstract

At the beginning of the summer I made a pact with my nine-year-old son: We would spend his non-camp days hiking, searching for waterfalls hidden in the woods and parks near our home. I wanted to spend time with him away from technology and schedules. I have been recording our adventures in letters. Below is what I wrote to him after our third hike, when our searching led me back to an essay I read as an undergraduate.
