Abstract

Neuromuscular training is increasingly recognised for enhancing football performance and athletes’ capacity to tolerate the repetitive high-intensity demands of match play. The French Contrast Method (FCM) combines heavy resistance, plyometric, and ballistic exercises within a post-activation performance enhancement framework, yet evidence in elite youth players during the competitive season remains limited. This study examined the effects of an eight-week in-season FCM program on reactive strength, neuromuscular performance, maximal strength, anaerobic performance, and short-distance sprint ability. Twenty-eight elite male youth football players were randomly assigned to an experimental group (FCM plus regular football training; n = 14) or a control group (regular training only; n = 14), training twice weekly for eight weeks. Outcome measures included the Reactive Strength Index Modified (RSImod), countermovement jump-derived variables, 10 m sprint performance, Wingate anaerobic parameters, and one-repetition maximum (1RM) strength. Data were analysed using mixed-design repeated-measures ANOVA. Significant group × time interactions favoured the FCM group for RSImod, back squat 1RM, propulsive phase duration, average power, and fatigue index (p < 0.05), whereas no interactions emerged for 10 m sprint, flight time, jump height, or bench press 1RM. The findings indicate that adding an eight-week FCM training programme to regular soccer training results in changes to specific performance outcomes in elite young soccer players. However, because direct neuromuscular measures were not assessed, the underlying mechanisms responsible for these changes cannot be confirmed. Therefore, the results should be interpreted in terms of the observed performance outcomes rather than as direct evidence of neuromuscular adaptations.
