Abstract

With my research, I seek to figure out what potential Sacred Heart University graduate students look for in an online degree program if the university were to offer one. My study consists of the results from a survey I sent out to prospective graduate students using the choice-based conjoint analysis method.

I used an online tool called Sawtooth Software, which allows the researcher to formulate a variety of questions pertaining to respondents’ interests and preferences. In this case it asks preferences and opinions of online degree programs. Once the survey has been taken, it then produces a number of graphs to interpret the data so that the marketing researcher can break down the respondents’ problems/concerns and identify efficient solutions/ steps for making the university’s online program a success.

Some examples of questions asked on the survey are as follows:

  • If attending an online university, indicate how desirable it would be to have solely online classes, one-on-one sessions, and hybrid courses.
  • How important is it for teachers to post previously answered questions to determine problems with the curriculum?
  • How important is it for the class syllabus to be available before signing up for a class?

Correlating with the rise of online degrees, students from the research may also have increasing expectations when it comes to graduate degrees, especially since students could be indebted due to costs accrued from undergraduate studies.
