Abstract

This play examines the female need to make men comfortable, a concept that I have always pondered as a woman. At the Mid-American Theatre Conference I will have a chance to present this ten-minute play to scholars and critics, as well as master students and theatre professionals. I will receive feedback and criticism from different playwrights and experienced theatre professionals. Not only will my work be read out loud at this conference, I will also have the opportunity to attend different lectures at this conference that will help me throughout my future career. For example, there is a lecture on how to get published. There are also history symposiums, including some titled, “Revolutionary Acts in US Theatre 1920 and 30s”, “Revolution Deferred: The Missing Department of Public Art, and “Classical Continuity: Tragedy and Revolution in the Greek Nation-State”. There will also be symposiums on play production including some called “Breaking the Cycle: New Considerations of Old Theatrical Biasesand Practices”, “Casting and Creating Importance: Complicating Race and Gender in Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest”, and “An Actress Prepares: How Typecasting for Women in the Theatre Reinforces Cycles of Trauma”. These lectures and symposiums will touch upon all aspects of higher education and the professional theatrical world.

This experience will be beyond beneficial to me and my wish is for the knowledge that I gain at MATC will benefit my peers here at Sacred Heart as well. I am a part of the university’s Theatre Arts Program and a member of the programs Executive Board. My title on the executive board is the New Works Chair, meaning I am responsible for pushing new plays and musicals on our program and running our student playwriting festival “TheatreFest”. I plan on taking what I learn at the Mid-American Theatre Conference and bringing it back to my peers and fellow playwrights in the Theatre Arts Program.
