Abstract
Medical trauma has a profound negative impact on patients and their families, physiologically and psychologically. Trauma does not discriminate, it affects people of all genders, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Trauma informed care is an intervention that can reduce the risk of medical trauma occurring or retraumatization from happening. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration defines trauma informed care as, “an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma”. In order to actually provide care that abides by a trauma informed approach, six leading principles are followed. These six principles are safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment of voice and choice, and finally cultural, historical, and gender issues. Trauma informed care has proven to better quality improvement outcomes for both patients and healthcare organizations. On the patient side, trauma informed care has been proven to increase trust in healthcare professionals and the healthcare system, increase adherence to treatment plans, improve satisfaction with the care received, and improve overall health outcomes. On the hospital side, trauma informed care has been proven to decrease costs and also increase job satisfaction of staff.
