Abstract

Este documento relata cómo las razas angloamericana, amerindia y negra estuvieron representadas en libros de texto de la escuela primaria y na literatura juvenil en el siglo XIX. Una muestra de textos de geografía, historia y lectura, y revistas juveniles y infantiles publicadas entre 1790 y 1890 fueron examinadas para determinar cómo se representaron las tres razas. También se presenta información adicional de publicaciones para adultos y científicas para proporcionar un contexto para las opiniones expresadas en los libros de texto y la literatura relacionada. Con base en la información transmitida en las publicaciones, se identificaron y discutieron brevemente conceptos relacionados con el color de la piel, el origen de las razas, la asociación de la raza con la organización social, la jerarquía racial y la superioridad y inferioridad racial. Se incluyen amplias citas de los libros de texto para fundamentar los argumentos presentados en la narrativa.

This paper examines how the Anglo-Americans, Amerindian and Negro races were represented in elementary school textbooks and juvenile literature in the 1800s. A sample of geography, history and reading texts and children’s magazines published between 1790 and 1890 were examined to ascertain how the three races were depicted. Additional information from adult and scientific publications is also presented to provide context for the views expressed in the textbooks and related literature. Based on the information conveyed in the publications, concepts related to skin color, the origin of the races, the association of race with social organization, racial hierarchy, and racial superiority and inferiority were identified and briefly discussed. Ample quotes from the textbooks are included to substantiate the arguments advanced in the narrative.
