Abstract

Nitrite reacts with indole in propanol and sulfuric acid to form a dark red solution. The spectrum of the solution showed two broad bands: one with a fine structure at a maximum at 361nm and another broader band at 500nm. Solutions of nitrite with 2-methtylindole and 3-methylindole gave only one band with a fine structure and a maximum at 356nm and 358nm, respectively. Maximum absorbances were achieved in less than two hours. Plots of absorbance versus wavelength, concentration, and changes of the extinction coefficient with time versus wavelength are reported.
