Abstract

Thomas H. Hicks, professor of Psychology and Religious Studies at Sacred Heart University, presents an interpretation of John Updike's novels "Couples" and "Marry Me", and his book "Self-Consciousness", a collection of autobiographical pieces. Prof. Hicks discusses classical and Christian themes in these works, adultery as a form of human anguish, sex as a substitute for religion, and the moral transitioning happening in the time the books were written.
