Abstract
John Berkman writes about the first and third chapters of John Paul II's encyclical Veritatis Splendor. The first chapter is a study of the nature of Christian discipleship, examined through the lens of St. Matthew's account of Jesus' meeting with the rich young man (Matthew 19). The third chapter is largely a discussion of the significance of Christian martyrdom. In this paper Berkman highlights the primacy of discipleship for rightly understanding Veritatis Splendor.
