Abstract

My research analyzes the factors for youth sports choices, focusing on the integration and influence of racial segregation. Background research reveals educational resources, lack of physical education in low-income schools, historical segregation and the influence of the media to be important factors. I incorporated ice hockey and basketball, two sports dominated by Caucasians and African Americans respectively, to highlight the persistent lack of diversity in sports today. We may understand that historical segregation, geographical placement, racism and financial constraints deter a low-income child from pursuing a sport such as ice hockey. Conversely, the historically-lower financial requirements, and easy of access for urban communities, influences its popularity as a choice for African American children.
