Abstract

Dress codes are often formed with the idea of creating a healthy and safe learning environment, but often end up targeting the female student body as a result. Dress codes often aim at protecting the female student body from embarrassment and unwanted advances, but end up objectifying the female body instead.

The point of bringing this issue into light is not to say that dress codes are an awful idea that need to be abolished. The point of highlighting the flaws within public school dress codes is to help raise awareness of the issue and spark conversation on ways to fix it. Dress codes are outdated and unfairly target the female student body in a way that objectifies them. Although dress codes are necessary in schools, improvements need to be made so that dress codes are fair to all students within the school regarding appropriate apparel and enforcement.

In order to create a dress code that favors all students, dress codes need to be updated. Dress codes should be a fair set of rules in regards to appropriate dress for all students. Doing this would create policies that do not target girls, therefore creating a learning environment that is inclusive to everyone. When administrators do decide to update their dress codes, they should take student voice, practicality and relevance, and the message into account.
