Abstract

In order to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in today’s society as a professional athlete, would you ever think they needed to work a part-time job? This is just one of the harsh realities female athletes must endure in their professional athletic careers because of biases, discrimination, and current societal views. Less than just one percent of the overall population play professional sports and only forty percent of professional athletes are women compared to sixty percent representing the male gender. A professional athlete is an athlete that receives payment for their performance in a specific sport, someone who is so talented, trained, or skilled in their sport that they can make a living by playing. One would think that male and female athletes are to be treated equality but there are great disparities resulting in challenges only female athletes have to face. Discrimination against girls and women in sports still remains widespread in today’s society which can be seen through the complaints filed with the Office for Civil Rights. “There were 416 athletics complaints filed with OCR between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2006 –likely just a fraction of the number of complaints that were raised informally with schools during that period” (Halloway 70). Of the complaints filed with the Office for Civil Rights, discrimination against women was eleven times more frequent than compared to men displaying the barriers that still exist for women athletes. Not only do female athletes have to face discrimination but, being a female athlete in today’s society is characterized by disadvantages and challenges that inhibit the progression of athletic equality between genders.
