Abstract

Student athletes are often subjected to a great deal of pressure as they try to carefully balance academic studies with sporting commitments. The transition from high school to college is a stressful time for any student; however, student athletes are confronted with a comparably unique stress as they are expected to succeed in both academic and sport settings with little time for adjustment. To ease this transition for these young adults, college campuses should implement mental health resources that are specifically catered to student athletes. These resources can be used to specifically help student-athletes manage the unique pressures and stress they encounter throughout a typical academic year.

My capstone paper will discuss the importance of providing mental health resources to student athletes. Designating school assets to the care of their student-athlete’s mental wellbeing will be the first step in supporting these young adults as they navigate through the stress of academics and sport. Understanding the unique challenges a student-athlete faces, which differ from those of the average student, is a responsibility of universities as they place tremendous expectations on young men and women to perform in both academic, sport, social, and career settings. In my paper, I will discuss the benefits of such services on various aspects of a student-athlete’s life. By prioritizing mental wellbeing, I believe that there will be improvements in student-athlete’s sport, academic, social, and career satisfaction. As college campuses begin to take initiative in supporting their student-athletes from a mental health perspective, student-athletes may become better able to balance their commitments throughout the academic semesters. I expect that my understanding and appreciation for the mental toughness of student-athletes will increase throughout my research for my capstone paper. I hope to understand ways in which college campuses can support their students, specifically their student-athletes, as they transition into sports seasons and face academic pressures and expectations. Caring for the mental health of student-athletes may have a positive effect in the sport, social, emotional, academic, and career aspects of their life.
