Abstract
This paper will explore the history of the comic book medium, beginning with tracing it back to its earliest origins and then delving into why the comic book has become a medium of storytelling that is frowned upon. From there, this paper will examine the links between comic books and crime fiction, pondering why while one medium was shuttered and watered down, another was allowed to blossom. This paper will then focus on Aristotle’s The Poetics and examine the different modes of storytelling such as the comedy and the tragedy. Finally, this paper will conduct a close reading and examination of the major themes, plot points and characters from the comic book series Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons to exemplify the literariness of the comic book medium of storytelling.
