Abstract

The popularity of the smartphone has led to a society where information can be accessed or shared at any time with just the tap of a finger. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have capitalized on this technology to create platforms where people can be more connected than ever before. The influence has bled into all levels of society. In terms of the sports world, social media has become an outlet for teams, athletes, and fans to grow a dedicated following of like-minded individuals. However, despite the progressive nature of these sites, they have not escaped many of the historical issues that plague modern culture, sometimes becoming breeding grounds for negative rhetoric surrounding issues of racism, homophobia, and more. One of these problems surrounds the representation of women’s sports in comparison to their male counterparts.
