Abstract
For my capstone topic I will be writing a bioethics paper discussing the potential uses and social implications of genetic editing. Editing the human genome is a controversial topic spanning across many different circles from the science community to health professionals to the public and religious groups up to international legislation. I will begin by providing background on the process of CRISPER/cas9 which is the technology that makes genetic editing possible. Next it is important to discuss the current uses and potential uses of the technology as well as the legislative response. Currently the laws in place focus primarily on not impacting the germline. In other words, the technology is not allowed to make changes that could be passed down to future generations (Healey, 2018). Once enough background is provided it opens the discussion of ethics in application. Just because the technology exists to make changes does not mean it should be used but where is the line drawn? And who draws it? Even if it is assumed to be allowed only for medical purposes and not superficial traits (eye color, hair color etc.) which genetic disorders warrant intervention? Pros and cons of fixing genetic disorders from medical and social standpoints will be included along with opinions and concerns of various communities, especially the disabled community who is directly impacted. It will then conclude with possible outcomes and options for moving forward with clinical application.
