Abstract
Throughout society, there are many universal uniters that brings large groups of people together. Some of these universal uniters include national pride, religion, and even sports. To an ordinary observer, sports looks the same; an environment that brings people from all different social and economic classes together through the love of sports. At a young age, sports are introduced to the lives’ of the participants, where they learn the rules of the games they play. Eventually, these participants end up in one of three areas; the professionals, the fans, or those who choose to work in the world of sport. If the ordinary observer were to take a deeper look at the roots of sports, they would find that sports are not so cookie cutter as they seem. A deeper look at sports would reveal that, depending on the region of the world, there are different styles of sport that are implemented. With a look at North American sports first, the ordinary observer would find a more restrictive and more exclusive atmosphere, referred to as the closed style of sport. Looking at sports around the world, especially in Europe, this will not be the case. Unlike their North American counterparts, European sports are less restrictive and more inclusive. The style of sport seen in Europe and many other places around the world is called the open style of sport. Through this paper, an ordinary observer or the most enthusiastic sports fan will understand that both styles have their benefits and their drawbacks with their implementation. Although this paper has its own stance, it will be up to the reader to have their own opinion on which style of sport is better.
