Abstract

Have you ever wondered if your culturally responsive pedagogies (CRP) are as strong as they could be? Many teachers, eager to learn more about developing CRP, have sought after checklists or prescriptive steps for enacting CRP. The challenge with anything prescriptive, however, is that its formulaic nature ceases to be responsive and relevant to the culture and community context. Rather, developing CRP involves honing a responsive and ethical mindset that continually informs one’s actions. “‘Doing’ is less important than ‘being.’ . . . Practicing [CRP] is one of the ways of ‘being’ that will inform ways of ‘doing’” (Ladson-Billings, 2006, p. 41).
