Abstract
Summary: Oxidation of chromium, manganese, iron, and nickel oxides in the presence of alkali metals hydroxide at high temperature was investigated. Transition metal oxides reactions with alkali metal hydroxide were studied of 550°-750°. These transition metals were found to be oxidized over 550°. During the reaction with alkali metal hydroxide, transition metal oxides were oxidized. High oxidation state of transition metals was stabilized in these basic mixtures. The reactions were followed by visual observation of the color change after heating the sample up to 750°. Both Raman and reflectance spectroscopy were used in an effort to determine the oxidation state of the transition metals.
