Abstract
A simple spectrophotometric procedure for the determination of nitrite in water is described. The determination is based on the reaction of nitrite with acidified solution of indole. The stability of indole in solutions containing H₂SO₄ in methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol was examined and reported. The simplicity of this method and the reduced chemical hazard represent improvement over existing methods. Detection limit for the method is 1 ppm of nitrite.
