Abstract
The undiscriminating, reform-minded people’s pontiff faces growing resistance from conservative factions within the Church. The prospect of a split is not to be ignored. What keeps popes up at night if not the prospect of schism? No pontiff wants such a thing on his watch. After all, the Bishop of Rome is enjoined – by divine authority no less – to keep the Body of Christ unified. So it would be a big black mark on a papal CV if it were allowed to happen
