Born in Scarsdale, NY, Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer was a long-time resident of New Canaan moving there in 1915 with her husband and three children. There she wrote her autobiography Bowery to Bellevue: The Story of New York’s First Woman Ambulance Surgeon.
Emily Dunning Brringer was the first woman to physician to receive post-graduate surgical training in hospital service and the first female ambulance surgeon.
