Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to explore the nature and function of supernatural legends relating to the sea and its environment amongst the coastal communities of Ireland. It will do so by drawing on a selection of narratives from the Schools’ Folklore Collection, a component part of the from the National Folklore Collection of Ireland, which is archived at University College Dublin. Much attention has been paid to the topic of supernatural coastal legends to date, and previous works draw on material from a wide variety of sources, but the objective of this short study is to offer a sample of the material found in the Schools’ Folklore Collection.
