Abstract

‘Raidió na Gaeltachta – Cultúr & Pobal’ looks at the influence RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltacht has had on the life and culture of people who live in the Gaeltacht since the service was established in 1972.

RTÉ RnaG’s story is told here through the lens of folklore and ethnology. De Mórdha gives an insight into the history of the media in Ireland prior to the establishment of Raidió na Gaeltachta, and looks at native and minority communities around the world and how they were portrayed on the radio. The cultural and historic landscape around the establishment of RnaG is also examined within the context of international civil and human rights movements. Raidió na Gaeltachta’s role in the community life and in creating a ‘trans-local’ Gaeltacht community is also discussed.

Tugtar féachaint sa leabhar seo ar an dtionchar atá imeartha ag Raidió na Gaeltachta (RnaG) ar shaol agus ar chultúr mhuintir nа Gaeltachta ó bunaíodh an tseirbhís lán-Ghaeilge i 1972. Déantar scéal RnaG a insint trí fráma tagartha an bhéaloidis agus na heitneolaíochta, den gcéad uair. Tugtar léargas ann ar stair na meáin chumarsáide in Éirinn roimh theacht RnaG, agus i bpobail bundúchasacha agus mionlacha ar fud an domhain, agus go háirithe an tsli inar léiríodh cultúr na bpobal úd ar an raidió. Tá cur síos anseo ar na cúinsí inar bunaíodh RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta maidir le saol na Gaeltachta mar a bhí ag an am, agus i gcomhthéacs gluaisteachtaí agóide idirnáisiúnta maidir le cearta sibhialta agus cearta daonna agus an bhaint a bhí ag cúrsaí na meáin chumarsáide leis na gluaiseachtaí seo.
