Abstract
This chapter discusses the historical and current environmental factors influencing the family of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder and relevant theories of family stress, coping, and resilience. Another important consideration is how the individual with an ASD views family functioning. Finally, the chapter provides strategies for professionals to incorporate into their work with families.
