Abstract

Research on older gender (e.g., transgender, nonbinary) and sexual (e.g., lesbian, gay men, bisexual) minorities has historically been underrepresented in the field of psychology and aging. This chapter reviews key findings in health and well-being outcomes in this expanding literature. Much of this work highlights health disparities and challenges, which are strongly linked to past marginalization. These challenges are shaped by historical and sociocultural contexts, particularly for older cohorts who came of age during more stigmatizing eras, which persist and vary based on global context. Increasingly, however, research has examined resilience factors. As this field evolves, it is paramount to continue momentum through funding, inclusive research practices, and affirming models of care. Equipping aging professionals with appropriate training and culturally responsive competencies is essential to ensuring that older adults are supported in ways that affirm identity and foster successful aging trajectories.
