Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of research and practice related to the role of the work environment – specifically, organizational cultural support for work–life integration – in facilitating employee health and well-being. Our chapter summarizes and updates previous work by Andreassi and Thompson (2008) and provides recommendations for future research. We first review definitions of work–life culture and related constructs, followed by a discussion of common conceptualizations and measurement tools. We then describe the expanding research on work–life culture, discuss how work-life culture relates to the use of work-life benefits, and describe corporate examples of initiatives designed to improve cultural support for work–life integration. We conclude with ideas for future research based on existing gaps in the literature.
