Abstract
The Intensive Care Unit can be an emotionally taxing and distressing experience for patients and their families. Many patients in the ICU are intubated and sedated, connected to various machines and wires. The patient lying in front of the family is unrecognizable. Families are left with a multitude of questions and concerns. The educational booklet entitled “What To Expect When A Loved One Is Intubated” was designed for the family at the bedside during the time of the patient's ICU admission. The information included in the booklet explains the mechanism of the life-sustaining ventilator, common medications administered, daily hygienic care, and the interprofessional ICU team dedicated to their patients' care. Family members and friends can find great ease in understanding the basics of the care provided to their loved one. Utilizing a family-centered approach to explain the best evidence-based research and practices, this educational booklet outlines what is to be expected while a loved one is intubated in the ICU.
