Abstract

The high forces and velocities involved in the sport of football make players increasingly susceptible to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) such as concussions. TBIs often lead to chronic neurodegenerative consequences, having a great impact on quality of life as players age, and data supports a high prevalence of both concussions and CTE in NFL athletes. Although data regarding the dangers of concussions has been around for a long time, public awareness of these dangers is just beginning to increase, and many changes within the NFL have resulted. There has been a collaborative effort between groups, such as the NFL, NFL Player’s Association, biomechanists, and coaches, to increase player safety. Much debate has surfaced among NFL players and viewers regarding the importance of player safety versus the maintenance of the intended physical nature of the game. The effects of these changes, in addition to the increase in public awareness, on the NFL as a business and youth participation are of great importance to this argument.
