Abstract

Honors Capstone Paper Abstract

In this paper, the commonly unspoken trials of pregnant women and new mothers will be discussed. Beyond this, solutions are going to be proposed and proven worthwhile in decreasing the incidence of postpartum depression (PPD) and its accompanying tragic, perinatal conditions. The extent of the misfortunes of PPD are explored, and the subject of fear of childbirth is fully explained and identified as a causative factor. All of this information is used to advocate for obstetrician-led mental health education and maintenance classes for pregnant women during their second trimester of pregnancy. Compared against current perinatal guidelines for pregnant patients in healthcare, feasibility of this second trimester approach is investigated and its merits are argued. The purpose of this discussion is to show the paradox between the famous joys of motherhood and the risks that can also arise, and to give an additional, practical layer of support to mothers to avoid those risks.
