Description
Maria migrated from Puerto Ric to Hartford where she would eventually advocate for the Puerto Rican population. With only an 8th grade education, she would become the first Latina elected to the Connecticut General Assembly. Maria also founded the Puerto Rican Day Day parade in 1964 and would hold other public offices. In 1973, she was the first Puerto Rican with a seat on the Board of Education.
