Abstract
Sacred Heart University, a coeducational commuter institution located in the Bridgeport, Connecticut area, was conceived in the innovative spirit of Vatican II by the Most Rev. Walter W. Curtis and the Diocese of Bridgeport in 1962 and chartered as an independent corporation in February of the following year. Its unique system of lay control has become a “blueprint for innovation” within Catholic higher education. Through an integrated program of liberal education, the University concentrates on developing the moral and spiritual growth of students and service to the larger community.
